Officials from the Guwahati Branch Office of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) executed a raid at Plascom Industries in Assam’s Kamrup district on 13 May. The enforcement action, disclosed by Assam’s Press Information Bureau, was triggered by targeted intelligence and internal investigations.
The factory was caught producing and illegally branding ‘Polypropylene (PP) woven sacks for 25-kg polymer packaging’ with the ISI quality mark without holding a legitimate BIS license. Authorities confiscated six-metric tonnes of the counterfeit packaging during the sweep.
The targeted polymer sacks fall under mandatory national quality guidelines dictated by Indian Standards IS 16703: 2017, meaning they cannot legally be made or sold without mandatory BIS registration.
Legal proceedings are now underway against the business under Sections 17(1) and 17(3) of the BIS Act, 2016. Under this legislation, copying or applying official standard markings without explicit state approval is strictly banned, and violators face a minimum fine of INR 2,00,000, up to two years in prison, or both penalties combined.
