FSSAI drafts ban on PFA and BPA in food packaging

This move, which marks a significant strengthening of India’s food safety standards, directly addresses public health concerns over chemical migration from packaging into food products. PFA and BPA, often referred to as "forever chemicals" because of their extreme persistence in the environment and the human body, are currently utilised for their grease and water-resistant properties in food wraps and containers.

The FSSAI’s action might help to remove consumer exposure to these compounds, which have been linked globally to potential health risks including liver damage and hormonal issues. BPA is commonly found in the linings of metal cans and certain plastic containers, where it can potentially leach into food.

This proposal by the FSSAI initiates a 60-day public consultation period, allowing stakeholders—including the packaging industry, manufacturers, consumer groups, and the public—to submit their feedback and objections. A notice is given that the said draft regulations will be taken into consideration after the expiry of the period of 60 days from the date on which the copies of the Gazette containing this notification are made available to the public.
