Now the department offers MTech in packaging technology, MTech in paper and pulp engineering and PhD programs in both the fields.

The head of department, Prof Kirtiraj Gaikwad, said, “I am honoured to lead this transformation as the head of department. Together, we aim to make IIT Roorkee a hub for sustainable paper and packaging research.”

The branch at IIT Roorkee has had some serious contributions and developments in terms of sustainable packaging. One of them being a cost-effective and biodegradable Kodo millet-based edible cup which reduces the carbon footprint of packaging.

Gaikwad’s vision is driven by the dual goals of improving food packaging efficiency and sustainability while ensuring the safety and satisfaction of consumers. By addressing these critical aspects of food packaging, Gaikwad aims to contribute to the advancement of the food industry and the global effort towards a more sustainable and secure food supply chain.

As an educator in the field of packaging, one of the fundamental problems faced by Gaikwad was lack of updated curriculum. Staying current with rapidly evolving technology and industry trends can be challenging.

Secondly, he expressed, keeping students engaged in practical learning and hands-on experience. Thirdly, employability, ensuring that students are job-ready with relevant skills upon graduation. The new Department of Paper and Packaging Technology aims to solve these challenges.
