Hundreds of employees at Jindal Stainless, participated in a plastic waste collection drive conducted across the corporate office and manufacturing plants in Hisar and Jajpur to mark the World Environment Day on 05 June 2023. This initiative conducted in association with Green Dream Foundation aims to put the spotlight back on its continued efforts and focus on sustainability, responsible waste management practices and reduction of plastic waste.

Speaking about the initiative, Abhyuday Jindal, managing director, Jindal Stainless, said, “I am pleased to conclude the second edition of our company’s plastic waste collection drive, which was expanded to include our manufacturing plants this year, and resulted in the collection of over two tonnes of plastic waste. At Jindal Stainless, our unwavering focus on sustainability drives our actions as we strive to make a positive difference in society. As pioneers in the Indian stainless steel industry, we are dedicated to leaving a lasting and positive impact for posterity.”

A few other initiatives include optimised waste heat recovery systems, utilisation of renewable energy (RE) power, an energy conservation project, switching to rail from road transport, recycling waste material, and increased RE facilities in the CSR activities. This helped Jindal Stainless achieve a reduction of approx 1 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions in the last fiscal (FY23) and an overall reduction of nearly 2.4 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions in the last two fiscals (FY22 and FY23).

This plastic collection drive witnessed participation from over 1,500 employees. More than 1,100 kg of plastic waste was collected from Jajpur, over 750 kg from Hisar and nearly 150 kg from the corporate office in Gurgaon. All participants were given a token of appreciation. Like last year, the plastic waste collected during this campaign will be converted into useful products such as chairs, benches, and dustbins. However, this time the company aims to place these aesthetic installations in public places after consulting the local government bodies, in order to further its brand image of a sustainable and environment-friendly organisation.

From its net zero carbon emissions goals by 2050 to conducting monthly environment audits, installing state-of-the-art facilities, such as dust extraction systems, electrostatic precipitators, bag filters, and dry fog systems to treat air emissions, to owning separate effluent treatment plants and sewage treatment plants that follow norms laid out by State Pollution Control Boards, Jindal Stainless, as a responsible business, proactively undertakes efforts towards its sustainability endeavours.

Key developments at plant level

During FY 2022-23, the Hisar plant initiated a switch from a thermal energy-intensive manufacturing setup to renewable energy alternatives, such as solar and Green Hydrogen, and the usage of biofuels, recycling of Interleaving Paper (ILP) and many more.

The company is working on the waste to wealth concept, adopting technologies to generate biogas as well as compost utilising the food & horticulture waste. Both Hisar and Jajpur plants will generate 55 metric tonnes of compost per year through the recycling of plantation and food waste.

 

The floating and rooftop solar plants commissioned in Jajpur and Hisar during FY 2022-23 are projected to generate over  329 million units (kWh) of clean electricity and have the potential to offset more than  2.95 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions over their 25-year lifespan. Another 27 MWp rooftop solar projects at both the plants has already started. MoU has already been signed for 100 MW of Round the Clock RE Power project to deliver power to our Jajpur plant.

The Jajpur plant has also introduced four new electric vehicles in the facility which will reduce overall carbon emissions by 54 tonnes. Jindal Stainless is in plans to decarbonize its entire fleet of employees’ transportation through electric buses.
To promote water conservation, the Jajpur plant uses about 39% recycled and harvested water of the total water consumption.
