Marico, one of India's leading FMCG companies, marked World Environment Day by introducing its Packaging Material Circularity Score framework as part of its 2030 Decade of Action sustainability plan. The initiative was designed to evaluate and enhance the environmental performance of its packaging portfolio, according to the press release.
Over the previous three years, Marico claims to have eliminated 517.5-tonnes of virgin plastic from its packaging system and avoided 1,690-tonnes of carbon emissions through sustainable innovations. By FY25, 95.1% of its packaging had become recyclable, while the company had collected and processed 75,119 tonnes of plastic waste under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations. PVC usage had been reduced to below 0.05% across its packaging.
The new assessment framework was built around 10 key parameters, including material circularity, design efficiency, end-of-life recovery, elimination of uncommon/hazardous materials, EPR performance, consumer engagement, and innovation.
For the coming decade, Marico set ambitious targets:
- Incorporating over 30% recycled content in non-food plastic packaging by FY30
- Transitioning to 100% recyclable packaging
- Achieving zero hazardous waste-to-landfill at its manufacturing facilities
Commenting on this, Amit Bhasin, chief legal officer, group general counsel, and secretary of the CSR Committee, Marico said, “At Marico, we are not just reducing plastic, we're redesigning our entire packaging ecosystem. Introduction of the Packaging Material Circularity Score assessment framework marks a decisive step forward in building a circular, low-impact packaging system and responsible material consumption. Our commitment to social responsibility is deeply ingrained in our business philosophy and as part of our 2030 Decade of Action, we are accelerating efforts to meet bold sustainability goals that align with global climate imperatives. This framework will help us track and achieve measurable progress, ensuring that innovation and responsibility go hand in hand as we work towards a truly circular economy.”
As a Founding Member of the India Plastics Pact, Marico had collaborated with industry peers and policymakers. The company also aligned its strategy with international standards, including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Global Commitment and UN Sustainable Development Goals 12 and 13.
