Mespack has entered into a strategic partnership with Spookfish to integrate thermal inspection technology into its flexible packaging machinery, strengthening its in-line quality control capabilities.

Under the agreement, Spookfish’s thermal cameras and AI-based software will be integrated into Mespack’s Athena digital platform as part of an Inline Thermographic Inspection (ITI) solution. The system enables non-destructive, in-line inspection of pouch seals, allowing manufacturers to monitor seal quality during production.

The ITI solution uses infrared imaging to analyse the thermal profile of seals immediately after the sealing process. According to the companies, this allows the detection of variations in seal integrity, contamination, and process inconsistencies in real time, reducing the risk of defects and production losses.

The solution is designed to operate within the Athena environment, offering a user interface that supports data-driven monitoring and reduces dependence on operator intervention. It is also retrofittable, making it compatible with both new and existing Mespack machines.

Mespack said the partnership forms part of its broader strategy to expand its in-line inspection capabilities through collaborations with specialised technology providers. The integration combines Mespack’s packaging machinery expertise with Spookfish’s capabilities in thermal imaging and AI-based process monitoring.

Guillem Clofent, president of Mespack, said the collaboration supports the integration of inspection technologies directly into the packaging process to improve reliability and efficiency.

Dr Anupriya Balikai, managing director of Spookfish, said the partnership enables deployment of thermal inspection technology in industrial packaging environments at scale, with a focus on data-driven process validation.

Mespack, headquartered in Barcelona, manufactures flexible packaging machinery for applications including sachets, pouches, and water-soluble capsules, and operates across more than 90 countries. Spookfish develops AI-driven inspection systems for manufacturing, with applications across packaging, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial sectors.
