Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum Class I certification after diverting more than 99% of operational waste away from landfill sites through recycling, recovery, and segregation initiatives.

The certification was awarded by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) following an assessment of the airport’s waste diversion and recycling performance during the 2025-26 financial year.

According to airport operator Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the certification recognises significant improvements in sustainable waste management practices across airport operations.

Mumbai Airport joins a select group of major Indian airports handling more than 50 million passengers annually to achieve the Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum certification.

The assessment covered multiple waste streams generated across the airport ecosystem, including food waste, plastics, paper, wet and dry municipal solid waste, and operational materials.

The airport stated that its waste management framework is built around the 5R principles — Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, and Recover — supported by dedicated segregation systems and recycling infrastructure.

A specialised Environment and Sustainability team manages waste segregation, monitoring, and the transfer of recyclable materials to authorised recycling facilities.

The certification forms part of a broader sustainability roadmap being implemented across the airport’s infrastructure and operational network.

Over the past year, the airport has expanded its renewable energy usage, improved energy efficiency by more than 40%, and accelerated electrification of its ground support vehicle fleet.

The airport also recently secured Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation, further strengthening its sustainability credentials and long-term environmental strategy.

According to CSMIA, the latest certification reflects the airport’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into core operational processes while preparing for future passenger growth and infrastructure expansion.
