Allinova brings coating expertise, particularly in the formulation and production of water-based dispersions

Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co KGaA, a leading international supplier of printing inks and coatings, has acquired Allinova, a specialty chemicals company based in Hengelo, the Netherlands. This strategic acquisition boosts Siegwerk's packaging coating business and marks another step towards its goal of becoming a leading provider of circular and digital packaging solutions.

Allinova brings coating expertise, particularly in the formulation and production of water-based dispersions. Its globally established product portfolio, ranging from polymer dispersions to wax emulsions and adhesives, is an excellent complement to Siegwerk's existing packaging coatings.

Gilles Le Moigne, the business head of circular economy coatings (CEC) at Siegwerk, said, "Allinova’s solutions fit perfectly into our product portfolio and accelerate our mission to provide innovative and sustainable coating solutions for the global packaging market." He added, "The acquisition will enable us to combine Allinova’s technical capabilities and expertise with our global reach and in-depth market knowledge.”

By integrating Allinova’s coating technologies and technical knowledge, Siegwerk is well-positioned to deliver advanced, application-specific solutions that meet the evolving demands of these industries.

Gijs Elfrink, founder and owner of Allinova, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are delighted to have found a great partner and new shareholder for Allinova. Siegwerk will integrate our expertise into a significantly larger organisation, thus advancing our products in the global market.” Founded in 2005, Allinova initially focused on flame retardants and wax emulsions. With Bob Horsthuis joining as co-owner in 2016, the company expanded its product portfolio to include high-quality dispersions and wax emulsions for packaging, along with other specialties such as flame retardants, repellents, and crosslinkers. Gijs Elfrink and Bob Horsthuis will remain part of the team following the acquisition.

In April 2024, Siegwerk established a new global business unit dedicated to functional coatings for sustainable packaging innovations in line with a circular economy.

Nicolas Wiedmann, the CEO of Siegwerk, said, “By acquiring Allinova, Siegwerk is doubling down on our global expertise in the area of functional coatings and therefore strengthening our position to serve our customers even better as an enabler of circular packaging solutions across all applications and technologies.” The CEC unit serves as a cross-divisional hub of excellence for circular solutions, integrating specialised functional coating technologies with the company’s conventional coating offerings. Wiedmann added, "With the acquisition of Allinova, we are expanding this technological expertise in the field of functional coatings, paving the way for even more packaging innovations in the future."

This latest acquisition follows other strategic investments Siegwerk has made in recent years to bolster its position as a full-range provider of inks and coatings for the packaging market. In 2022, Siegwerk acquired La Sorgente, a key ink supplier for flexographic printing in Italy. These acquisitions have allowed Siegwerk to expand its global footprint and enhance its core business in packaging printing.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed by either party.
