A report by Smithers titled the Future of eCommerce Packaging to 2031, authored by Windsor Holden, stated that the packaging industry is becoming increasingly efficient, driven by regulatory pressures and consumer demand.
The report posited that the global growth of the eCommerce packaging industry stands at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8%, with its value reaching USD 78.4-billion in 2025.
According to the report, corrugated boxes will remain the leading packaging format in eCommerce packaging, but they are expected to lose market share as right-sizing reduces overall shipment volumes. While flexible packaging is predicted to be the fastest-growing category within the same period, it is predicted to outperform other formats due to its efficiency and sustainability characteristics.
The market share of corrugated boxes stands at 79.9% according to the report. Holden stated, “The eCommerce packaging landscape is seeing a strategic shift where flexible packaging is replacing traditional corrugated board for specific product categories. This migration is driven by a need to balance shipping efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability targets.”
The report outlined product categories that are witnessing the fastest migration from corrugated boards to flexible packaging, in addition to how manufacturers and brands are managing the cost and supply chain implications of switching from traditional plastics to fibre-based materials and bioplastics.
Furthermore, the report pointed out markets that are pushing for obligatory reuse and refill requirements, and how global firms are adjusting their packaging strategy to fit different regional legislation.
