Sustainability-driven flexible packaging solutions are taking centre stage at Interpack 2026, where UPM Specialty Materials, Michelman and Bobst are jointly showcasing two bio-based paper packaging concepts developed to help brands meet evolving European Union packaging regulations, including the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).
Presented as ready-to-implement solutions for converters and brand owners, the concepts combine UPM’s fibre-based packaging papers, Michelman’s bio-based coatings and Bobst’s coating and application expertise. The companies say the structures deliver barrier protection and heat sealability while remaining compatible with existing packaging and converting lines.
The collaboration reflects a broader trend at Interpack 2026, where suppliers across the packaging value chain are focusing on recyclable, compostable and fibre-based alternatives to conventional plastic packaging.
One of the showcased concepts is designed for SUPD-compliant applications such as tea bags, oatmeal sachets and sugar stick packs. The paper structure incorporates bio-based coatings that provide moisture and mineral oil barrier performance along with a broad sealing window.
The second concept targets applications requiring higher oxygen barrier properties, including single-pack cookies and chocolate packaging. According to the companies, the structure achieves improved material efficiency through lower coating weights while maintaining functional packaging performance.
Mika Uusikartano, senior manager, product portfolio management at UPM Specialty Materials, said the collaboration aims to simplify development for converters and accelerate the adoption of scalable sustainable packaging solutions.
Michelman highlighted that compatibility with existing packaging equipment was a major consideration during development, while Bobst emphasised the importance of optimising coating parameters and runnability for industrial-scale production.
Both packaging concepts have been certified recyclable under Cepi/4evergreen v2 standards. Michelman’s coatings are TUV Austria-certified as OK Bio-based Class 5, while UPM’s paper substrates meet home compostability standards including NF T51-800:2015.
Sample structures are being displayed at the UPM Specialty Materials stand in Hall 8A, Stand F29, and Michelman’s stand in Hall 8A, Stand B25 during the ongoing exhibition. The companies will also host a joint presentation titled “Simplifying Adoption of Sustainable Packaging for Brands” at the Spotlight Forum on 11 May.
