BS Jolly: In 2023, the commitment to environmental responsibility is a positive shift that we should carry forward to 2024

One good thing from 2023 which you would like to carry forward to 2024?

In 2023, the commitment to environmental responsibility is a positive shift that we should carry forward to 2024.

Looking at 2023, what is the one thing that you think the packaging industry should abandon?

One aspect that our industry should consider abandoning is single-use plastics. By embracing alternatives and eco-friendly materials, we pave the way for sustainable growth, meeting both customer expectations and global environmental imperatives.

How do you disseminate knowledge; both within and without the organisation?

Internally, we employ digital platforms, mentorship programs, and regular workshops. Externally, we participate in industry events, collaborate with educational institutions, and engage in knowledge-sharing partnerships.

What is your customer's topmost priority?

The reticence to spend is easing in some beauty and manufacturers of health-related products. The concern of our customers in these segments remains presenting packaging with premium embellishments along with the sustainability of packaging solutions. They seek environmentally responsible options that align with their corporate values and resonate with eco-conscious consumers.

Everyone is pushing the sustainability agenda. What does it really mean?

Single-family polymers; efficient recycling; biodegradable materials; green certifications and audits. Sustainability stands for meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The United Nations Agenda for sustainable development stems from 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which inter-alia include social areas such as health and safety, talent development, diversity, local communities, economics and business ethics (ethical sourcing, fair competition, anti-corruption) besides environmental considerations (energy, water, waste, emissions).

What does sustainability mean for Edelmann?
Sustainability at Edelmann includes plastic replacement, recycling practices, usage of biodegradable materials, adherence to green certifications and audits. We also focus on diversity and inclusion, employee development, occupational health and safety and anti-corruption, anti-bribery. Sustainability for us is a strategy aimed at minimising our environmental footprint and contributing positively to the planet.

What is the conversation you are having with a customer in order to be prepared for the next 12 months?

This encapsulates their evolving needs, expectations, market trends, opportunities and any shifts in their business landscape. We address concerns related to pricing fluctuations, prepare for unexpected events like supply chain disruptions or geopolitical tensions, and stay abreast of government notifications and EPR regulations. Additionally, we do our performance review and take customer feedback on the products or services provided, the quality of delivery, and any challenges or issues faced.

One input for the FM which could benefit our industry?

Our input for the FM would be to incentivise research and development and reward work done in sustainable packaging solutions.
