The Jammu and Kashmir government is encouraging the transition away from chemical-intensive packaging used in traditional Apple Box crates by offering a 50% subsidy on safer alternatives, according to news agency reports. Officials are promoting the adoption of packaging such as multi-ply corrugated fibreboard with food-grade linings and wooden crates to reduce health and environmental risks associated with chemical-treated packaging materials.
The subsidy scheme aims to lower the cost barrier for growers, exporters and packers in adopting approved packaging solutions that meet food safety standards. By reducing dependency on hazardous treatments, the policy seeks to align agricultural packaging practices with modern safety and sustainability norms.
The move reflects broader efforts to modernise packaging in the horticulture sector, improve product shelf life and access new markets while reducing potential chemical exposure for handlers and consumers, according to the reports.
