Amcor expands healthcare packaging capacity at Karnataka facility

Amcor has announced a multi-million-dollar investment in its healthcare packaging manufacturing facility in Sira, Karnataka, to expand production capacity and strengthen its presence in the Indian and South Asian healthcare markets.

The investment includes the installation of a new production line designed to increase output, improve production flexibility and shorten lead times for pharmaceutical and healthcare customers. According to the company, the expansion will create more than 30 jobs.

The new line will manufacture ophthalmic containers, injectable vials and other healthcare packaging products. It also incorporates automated online vision systems intended to improve quality control and production consistency.

Jean-Marc Galvez, chief operating officer of Amcor's Global Rigids Packaging Solutions division, said the investment reflects the company's strategy of expanding healthcare manufacturing capabilities in India while strengthening local supply chains.

“The investment strengthens our strategically located manufacturing network, combining global expertise with local production capabilities to deliver faster response times, reliable supply and consistently high-quality pharmaceutical packaging for customers across the region,” Galvez said.

The company said the expansion also includes more energy-efficient production systems. The Sira facility operates on renewable energy and is certified to the ISCC PLUS standard.

Amcor currently operates four dedicated healthcare packaging facilities in India. In addition to the Sira plant, its Bengaluru facility manufactures ophthalmic and nasal delivery systems, inhalation devices and components used in injectable drug-delivery applications.

The Karnataka investment follows Amcor's recent healthcare packaging expansion in Asia-Pacific, including the commissioning of a new coating facility in Malaysia.

For the packaging industry, the investment reflects growing demand for pharmaceutical packaging and drug-delivery systems in India, where healthcare manufacturers are increasingly seeking localised supply, shorter lead times and higher levels of quality assurance.
