Coldplay to re-release albums on EcoRecords made of plastic bottles

Produced using injection-moulding technology, about nine recycled PET (rPET) bottles are used to make each 140-g record. Through a procedure called post-consumer recycling (PCR), plastic bottles are retrieved from customers, cleaned, turned into tiny pellets, and then moulded into new products.  This procedure cuts carbon emissions by 85% when compared to traditional vinyl production.

Coldplay’s re-released albums are available for pre-order and are set to go on sale on 15 August 2025. The re-release features all albums released by the band, from Parachutes to Music of the Spheres.

This eco-friendly strategy is part of Coldplay’s larger environmental initiatives, such as their 59% carbon footprint reduction during the Music of the Spheres World Tour.

In addition, this step follows the release of the band’s tenth album, Moon Music, which was released in 2024, on 100% recycled PET EcoRecords. Moon Music became the first album to be released as a 140g EcoRecord rPET LP.

The sound and appearance of an EcoRecord are identical to those of a conventional vinyl record, but they are made entirely of rPET, a recyclable material that is intended for a circular economy.

Jen Ivory, managing director, Parlophone, states, “We are incredibly proud to partner with artists such as Coldplay who share our commitment to a more sustainable future for music. The shift to EcoRecord LP for their releases is a testament to what’s possible when innovation meets intention. It’s not just about a new product; it’s about pioneering manufacturing that significantly reduces environmental impact, providing fans with the same high-quality audio experience while setting a new standard for physical music production.”
