Packaging has become central to product storytelling, and Bengaluru-based sneaker brand Comet's latest limited-edition launch demonstrates how structural design and nostalgia can transform the unboxing experience into a brand asset.

The company's new sneaker, Maachis, draws inspiration from the graphic language of vintage Indian matchboxes, translating familiar packaging cues into both the footwear design and its retail packaging.

Limited to 800 pairs, each sneaker is supplied in a matchbox-inspired carton featuring an oversized sliding box, vintage-inspired graphics and custom butter paper, recreating the experience of opening a traditional matchbox. The structural packaging has been designed as an extension of the product rather than simply a protective container.

The sneaker itself carries the same design language, combining beige suede with red accents, retro typography and graphics influenced by classic Indian matchbox labels. Comet has also incorporated a functional striker strip beneath the heel tab, allowing users to light a match directly from the shoe. The feature references the imagery of striking a match on footwear, popularised in Western cinema and more recently seen in Indian popular culture.

Utkarsh Gupta, co-founder of Comet, said the design celebrates an everyday object that carries strong visual and cultural associations. "The most exciting ideas often come from the most ordinary objects. Matchboxes have always been a part of everyday life, but they also carry a distinct visual identity that instantly sparks nostalgia. With Maachis, we wanted to celebrate that cultural memory while creating something people have never experienced before."

The launch reflects a growing trend in premium consumer goods, where packaging is increasingly being used to create memorable brand experiences and collectible products rather than serving solely as a transport medium.

While the campaign has generated discussion on social media for its unconventional striker-strip feature, it also highlights how heritage packaging graphics continue to influence contemporary product design.
