Revised labels are intended to be consumer-friendly by reducing instances of fake star rating claims

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has proposed the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Appliance Labelling) Regulations, 2025, with the previous approval of the Central Government.

The draft regulation was published on 10 July to establish a framework consisting of information on labels, including the unique number of labels, the name of the appliance and brand, and the model number. In addition, the label must include energy performance parameters, label year, rated capacity, star level of endorsement, validity, country of origin, and the serial number of the appliance.

Electronic appliances include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, chillers, electric ceiling fans, water heaters, colour televisions, washing machines, electric lamps, distribution transformers, grid-connected solar inverters, and solar photovoltaic modules.

As per the draft regulation, the colour, size, design, and content of the label must be printed according to the specifications mentioned in the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Appliance Labelling) Regulations, 2025.

The draft regulation stated that labels and quick response (QR) codes on the appliance must be embedded with information, and ensure that the information is easily visible, is printed and pasted on the packaging box of the appliance.

The updated label must be displayed on the appliances within six months of the amendment of the regulation, and no label must be affixed to any appliance without prior approval and permission from the Bureau.

The revised labels are intended to be consumer-friendly by encouraging consumers to opt for energy-efficient products and reducing instances of fake star rating claims.
