Flint Group, a leading supplier of inks and coatings to the global print and packaging industry, has released a new whitepaper to assist printers in navigating the increasingly complex landscape of food packaging regulations.

The whitepaper underscores the vital role of selecting the right ink and coating in minimising migration risk

Titled, Managing Changing Food Packaging Regulations with Advanced Ink Technology, the paper was developed in response to significant interest following the launch of the company’s innovative Flexocure LEAP ink system. It offers critical insights into the evolving regulatory environment and provides essential guidance on how new legislation is impacting food packaging safety standards.

The whitepaper underscores the vital role of selecting the right ink and coating in minimising migration risk. It specifically highlights the unique, future-proof performance of the company's Flexocure LEAP in designing safer, high-quality food packaging.

The release is timely given the pending arrival of the German Printing Ink Ordinance (GIO). Flexocure® LEAP was engineered to directly address these challenges, featuring a revolutionary resin system that stabilises photoinitiator compounds to drastically reduce migration risk. This advanced chemistry also simplifies migration testing, offering printers measurable efficiencies while upholding the highest safety standards.

Pierre Dogliani, the technical director Narrow Web Europe, commented on the development: "Flexocure LEAP is an entirely new technology unlike anything else in the industry. Thanks to its breakthrough formulation, this UV Hg curing technology meets and exceeds emerging regulations for food-safe packaging and labelling." Dogliani added, "Both this product and our new whitepaper demonstrate Flint Group’s ongoing commitment to supporting our customers as they prepare for the future and achieve safe, compliant, high-quality packaging."

The primary threat of migration in food packaging is its potential to harm consumer health. As well as compromising food taste, odour, and composition, certain substances that can migrate into the food may pose a health hazard. As a result, food packaging producers are typically required by regulations such as Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, which ensure their products are safe for their intended purpose.
