Mondi champions circularity with mono-material retort solutions at Interpack

As the "ticking clock" of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) dominates the conversation at Interpack 2026, Mondi has unveiled a suite of mono-material innovations designed to bridge the gap between high-performance food protection and strict circularity mandates.

With the PPWR’s general application date of 12 August 2026 fast approaching, the industry is under immense pressure to move away from non-recyclable multi-layer composites. Mondi’s response centers on the transition from traditional aluminum-laminated structures to mono-material polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) solutions.

High Barrier, No Aluminum

One of the most significant breakthroughs showcased is the sterilisable Recycle Retort Pouch. Traditionally, retort packaging relied on aluminum layers to provide the necessary oxygen and light barriers for long-term shelf stability. Mondi’s innovation replaces aluminum with a specialised high-barrier, PP-based film.

"The sterilisable stand-up pouch provides a shelf life of up to 12 months and withstands temperatures of up to 121°C," explains Jan-Mark Wilke, Business Development Manager at Mondi. "This allows consumers to heat meals directly in the pouch while ensuring the packaging remains fully compatible with existing mechanical recycling streams."

Combating Food Waste

The shift isn't just about recyclability; it is a tactical move against food waste. With the FAO reporting that 1.3 billion tonnes of food are lost annually, Wilke emphasises that intelligent packaging must extend shelf life to remain truly sustainable. Mondi’s pouches, available in sizes from 70 ml to 2,500 ml, serve a wide range of high-growth segments, including baby food and ready-to-eat meals.

Seamless Integration

For converters and brand owners concerned about capital expenditure, Mondi has ensured these mono-material structures are "plug-and-play." The materials are optimised for existing production and filling lines, requiring only minor calibrations rather than total machinery overhauls.

By combining brilliant print quality with resource efficiency, Mondi is proving that the road to PPWR compliance does not have to compromise shelf appeal or operational speed. As the industry eyes the 2030 recyclability milestones, mono-material retort technology appears set to become the new global standard.
