Smithers’ new report titled, The Future of Moulded Pulp Packaging to 2030, authored by Philippa Davies, notes that the moulded fibre market was worth USD 4.5-billion in 2025, with consumption at 12.6-million tonnes.

The report projects a 4.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the moulded pulp packaging industry through 2030. According to the report, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in Europe and expanding EPR rules worldwide are supporting the demand for sustainable solutions, which is likely to drive further growth in the moulded pulp market between 2025 and 2030.

Additionally, both Asia and Africa are growing rapidly as they catch up to more mature markets. Although consumer preferences and business sustainability objectives are powerful motivators, cost sensitivity is significant, and in certain situations, pulp can cost up to 25% more than plastic.

The research explains how moulded pulp can compete with expanded polystyrene (EPS) for product protection in light of eCommerce’s ongoing growth and how sustainability requirements and laws like PPWR and EPR will influence moulded pulp advancements.
