Suedpack Medica’s PharmaGuard trial introduces recyclable blister concept

PharmaGuard, a recyclable mono-material tablet blister, was awarded Silver at the recent 35th Packaging Innovation Awards (declared in October 2024). Südpack Medica is now gearing up to showcase the concept at the first industry conference of 2025, Pharmapack, at Paris on January 22. What makes the blister solution unique and sought-after by pharmaceutical companies is that it is free from chemicals, particularly nitrosamines—believed to be carcinogenic.

PharmaGuard, has a highly transparent film, strong water vapor barrier and a wide sealing range—ideal for solid orally administered medications. It can be integrated into existing mechanical recycling streams as it is a polypropylene-based solution.

Thomas Freis, managing director of Suedpack Medica has said, “PP inherently has a lower carbon footprint than composite materials like aluminium and PET, making PharmaGuard stand out with its significantly reduced climate impact (in CO2-eq.) as well as lower energy and water consumption.”

Switzerland-based Suedpack Medica is one of the leading suppliers of sterile packaging solutions and a partner for the global medical, pharmaceutical, and diagnostics industries.
