Global baked goods production reached 177 million tonnes in 2024 and is forecast to grow by nearly 10% by 2029

The global confectionery and bakery sector will take centre stage at Interpack 2026, as manufacturers grapple with rising costs, regulatory pressure and the need for technological transformation. The event, scheduled from 7–13 May at the Dusseldorf Exhibition Centre, will bring together solutions across the entire value chain in a dedicated zone spanning Halls 1, 3 and 4.

Covering around 40,000 square metres, the confectionery and bakery section will feature key industry players including Buhler, Sollich and Coperion. Technologies on display will range from raw material processing and forming to coating and packaging, reflecting the sector’s increasing focus on integrated production.
Despite ongoing challenges, market fundamentals remain strong. Global baked goods production reached 177 million tonnes in 2024 and is forecast to grow by nearly 10% by 2029. The confectionery segment is also expected to expand steadily, with emerging markets driving much of the growth.

However, exhibitors point to mounting pressure from volatile raw material prices, energy costs and stricter sustainability and health regulations. These factors are accelerating the shift towards more efficient, flexible and digitalised production systems. Automation, artificial intelligence and improved process control are emerging as key enablers for maintaining competitiveness.

Companies are also rethinking investment strategies, prioritising upgrades to existing facilities over new builds. Areas such as packaging, robotics, mixing and material handling are expected to see continued investment due to their impact on efficiency and product quality.

At the same time, innovation remains critical. Manufacturers are focusing on product reformulation, including sugar reduction and alternative ingredients, alongside building more resilient supply chains.

With more than 2,800 exhibitors expected, Interpack 2026 is set to act as a key platform for decision-making, offering confectionery and bakery producers insights into how to balance cost pressures with sustainability and evolving consumer demand.
