Fabio Spinelli: The Sagec system allows for the production of bubble boards in a “one-step” process

The Italian Trade Agency (ITA) organised the Italian Technology Day during the Plastindia show, showcasing the latest advancements in Italian technology for plastic and rubber processing. The conference consisted of nine eminent speakers from the Italian group of companies for plastics processing and technology.

The Italian manufacturer BG Plast, based north of Milan, is using the Plastindia platform to introduce its latest developments in the extrusion of foils and sheets. Fabio Spinelli of BG Plast provided an overview of the company’s extensive portfolio, which ranges from thin-foil lines to massive 9-m wide sheet lines, with a strong focus on high-performance materials for smarter packaging strategies.

The India highlight: Sagec bubble board. The primary highlight of the presentation is the Sagec patented extrusion system for multilayer bubble boards, which BG Plast is presenting for the first time to the Indian market. The system allows for the production of bubble boards in a “one-shot” process, significantly reducing start-up time and energy consumption.

Engineered to combine structural strength with reduced weight, Sagec is aimed at packaging applications where durability is required without adding bulk. Spinelli noted that this technology helps converters and brand owners lower transportation and logistics costs while maintaining high durability standards. The material is an ideal solution for protective and structural packaging, offering a lightweight alternative that is completely reusable and recyclable.

Thin-foil and recycling lines BG Plast showcased its capabilities in thin-foil lines for various materials, with thicknesses ranging from 0.15 to 1.80 mm and widths up to 1.6 m. The company also highlighted its recycling lines for thin-foils, specifically for bags and PET applications. These lines utilise different technologies, including single screw, parallel twin screw, and conical twin screw extruders, with capacities reaching up to 1,800 kg per hour.

Large-scale sheet and membrane production A significant achievement highlighted by Spinelli is the company’s improvement in HDPE geode grain production, where they have reached a total width of 9 m. A line with these specifications was recently delivered to the United Arab Emirates and is currently under commissioning.

The company’s portfolio also includes: Sheet lines for materials including PP, PE, PS, ABS, and PVC, with capacities up to 2,000 kg per hour. And hollow sheets, which are available in many different geometries with a capacity of up to 2,500 kg per hour.

Through a partnership with Italian manufacturer Extech, BG Plast also offers coating lines for materials like PVC, TPU, and TPO. These lines are available in single, 3, and 6-layer configurations, with a maximum width of 6,000 mm and capacity up to 1,000 kg per hour.
